About the Author: Jon Kalb is a geologist and paleontologist, and a Research Fellow with the Texas Memorial Museum at the University of Texas in Austin.  He has extensive field experience in Latin America, the Caribbean, South Pacific, and Africa. He has written numerous scientific publications on Ethiopia's Afar Depression, which he has studied for 30 years.
